Västervik Hospital was opened in 1912, there was a great need for care places for the mentally ill. The hospital was like a separate village, in which up to 1,400 patients and 900 staff were staying. It was a closed world, in which the visitors of the Psychiatric Museum today gets an insight. The museum is set up in the former nursing department, which has been restored and brought to the original state. The guided tour explains how the hospital was run at that time. There are also photographs from this period. Besides the permanent exhibitions, each year there are other smaller exhibitions arranged.
